A quiet, humming dryer is a beautiful thing. But when your laundry routine is suddenly interrupted by a loud squeaking, thumping, or grinding sound, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong.

Ignoring a noisy dryer doesn’t just ruin the peace and quiet—it can cause minor part failures to turn into expensive motor or drum replacements. Before you panic, let’s break down the 4 most common dryer sounds and exactly what is causing them.

1. A High-Pitched Squeaking or Squealing

  • The Culprit: Failing Drum Bearings or Idler Pulley.

  • The Details: If your dryer sounds like a rusty wheelbarrow, the idler pulley (which maintains tension on the drum belt) or the rear drum bearings are likely wearing out from friction.

  • What to do: This requires opening the cabinet to lubricate or replace the pulley and bearings before the belt snaps entirely.

2. A Consistent, Heavy Thumping Sound

  • The Culprit: Worn Drum Support Rollers.

  • The Details: Most dryers have small rubber rollers that the heavy metal drum sits on as it spins. Over time, these rollers can develop flat spots—especially if the dryer sat unused for a while or is constantly overloaded. As the flat spot hits the track, it creates a rhythmic thump-thump-thump.

  • What to do: Inspect the rollers. If one has a flat spot, it’s best to replace the entire set at the same time.

3. A Loud Grinding or Scraping Metal Sound

  • The Culprit: Worn Drum Glides or Slides.

  • The Details: At the front of the dryer drum, there are small plastic or Teflon strips called glides that allow the drum to rotate smoothly against the front panel. When these wear down completely, it’s metal-on-metal contact.

  • What to do: Stop running the dryer immediately. Continuing to use it with worn glides will permanently warp or cut into the metal drum.

4. A Continuous Rattling or Buzzing

  • The Culprit: Loose Objects or Blower Wheel Debris.

  • The Details: Before you pull the dryer apart, check the inside! Loose change, keys, or buttons left in pockets can slip into the lint filter housing or get caught in the blower wheel.

  • What to do: Clean out your lint trap housing completely. If the rattling continues from the bottom of the machine, a foreign object has likely made its way into the blower housing.
